Excellent Employee: Veronika K. Blair
Nominee's Unit: Business Services
Criteria: Above & Beyond

Customer Service Example:

Veronika has developed a deep understanding of the Student Information System (SIS) and was willing to demonstrate this system with all its "Unique" Quirks to the RSO's. When asked if she would be willing to have a brown bag session in a few days, she did not hesitate but accepted it joyfully (even though this is not required from her). Her positive and cheerful attitude allows for a pleasant dialogue.

Excellent Employee: Veronika Blair
Nominee's Unit: ERSO
Criteria: Problem Solver

Customer Service Example:

Veronika was instrumental in ensuring graduate and undergraduate Departmental financial aid award were entered into the new Student Award System (SIS) by the Campus’ deadline. This was a significant achievement, given the problems experienced when the new SIS system launched in August 2016. At launch, the new SIS system had several (significant) system issues that prevented award entry, which was compounded by the lack of central campus support.

Veronika was persistent in seeking answers from the SIS team to get issues resolved. She submitted multiple tickets, attended drop-in sessions, escalated issues to supervisor/manager, shared information with her colleagues (on troubleshooting issues) etc. Her commitment to resolve issues was driven by her commitment and desire to ensure students were not impacted by these system issues. She ensured that all the student awards were entered and approved to meet the campus deadlines.

This effort goes unseen by the students, but I appreciated her hard work, determination, and resolve to work through issues out of her control.

Finally, Veronika is willing to share her experience with the system with other ERSO staff. In fact, she is organizing a training session with RAs to share her best practices and demo the system.

Nominee's Unit: CSS Team 2 (ERSO)

My department needed a purchase order for a market research study to be put together in one week from the time that we received the final version of the quote and scope of work. Alice worked actively and positively with me on a daily basis, keeping me informed of the status, what details were needed, and developing multiple strategies in case we encountered delays. In the end, the PO was generated in less than 7 days from when we received that final quote, thanks in great part to the attention that Alice gave it. Throughout, her communication with me was excellent and her responsiveness (given the workload that must be on her desk!) was noteworthy. Our department is indebted to Alice and I wanted to be sure that her efforts

Excellent Employee: Natalie Chen

Customer Service Example:

Natalie always is a team player and goes above and beyond however, I have really appreciated all her help she has provided with reconciliation and match exceptions within the past month to allow me to focus on the transition to SIS to ensure students received their awards on time. These duties are not part of Natalie's typical daily/weekly tasks but she has taken these on without any hesitation which has been imperative during this system transition. I believe Natalie's hard work, positive attitude, dedication and willingness to help her colleagues with taking on additional work while still maintaining her own regular duties makes her an exceptional candidate for receiving a scoop salute.

Which Operating Principle did this team embody? We include and excel together
Describe what this team did that embodied the Berkeley Operating Principle selected above:

In May, Leslie led an internal team of RAs conducted testing and analysis using the newly launched PIP projection tool with a carefully outlined work plan and testing methodology to fully test the functionality of the projection tool; make recommendation to the RA Managers and RA community on how best to utilize the enhanced functionality in making projections for faculty research awards; Identify any pain points in the PIP functionality that prohibit the RAs from fully utilizing the tool in making projections. Work group members met every other week, despite of their own busy work schedules, diligently conducted testing and analysis following the prescribed methodology using PIP and BAIRS reporting tool. In late July the team presented their summary findings to the RA Managers and will present their finding/recommendation in the August RA Roundtable presentation. The team’s collective recommendation, as result of their hard work in PIP Capability Study and Analysis, contributed to the RA community in building knowledge base, sharing best practices and staff engagement truly exemplify the Berkeley Operating Principles: We include and excel, together; we focus on service; and we are accountable to each other.

Customer Service Example:

Therese had two days to organize and implement a lunch for visiting dignitaries (including the President of Tsinghua University). Chinese colleagues of Prof. Chang-Hasnain recommended this be part of a ceremony presenting Tsinghua faculty appointment letters - to faculty associated with TBSI. Specifications of food and other aspects of the event were very detailed. The tight timeframe and rigorous details required a significant amount of her time to carry out. This is an example of her attention to detail and high level of service commitment to her customers. Kudos to Therese!

Team Unit: Human Resources

Description:

This spring Vicky, Jennifer and Lucia took on the extensive task of auditing and organizing all I-9 documents ERSO manages. Nominee's Unit: ERSO/Team 2
Criteria: Above and Beyond

Customer Service Example:

Lucia Greenfield is a gem to work with. She is superbly responsive, helpful, and professional, with a great personal touch. As an example: Lucia recently helped me figure out a complex snafu that inadvertently was created by Team 9. One of our grad students' HCM termination was deleted by them, which activated a spring GSI that the student never held. The student was paid for one month for the GSIship, had to return a check, etc. etc.. At the end of the day, I would not have known what happened and what caused the mess, or how to fix it if it weren't for Lucia. It took several emails between us and the Graduate Division Appointments plus Team 9 to resolve the issue. Lucia's diligence and good humor got us through it!

Charlotte spent at least 30 minutes talking to the driver coaching him on navigating where he needed to go to deliver successfully. About 50 people were awaiting food. Finally the fellow arrived - very late - with no utensils/plates - and Charlotte complained to the owner/manager. All attendees finally got their food & utensils & the vendor decided to waive the bill due to the long delay of delivery and conversation with Charlotte.
